Here we see that 17th level in d20 is roughly equal to 21st level in D&D. It's easiest to compare progression by looking at wizard spell charts. The top level (plate & shield) is pretty comparable, so let's take that as a baseline. Or expressed as a percentage, D&D AC only increases by +3.5% for every +5% in d20. Interestingly, this shows that D&D only increases by +0.7 AC for every +1 AC in d20. Adding in our +1 DEX bonus this gives the following AC benchmarks:Ĭonverting to attack percentages for a first level fighter:
Let's give an average AC bonus due to DEX of +1.Ī decent shield in d20 grants +2 AC. If you need to convert a monster that doesn't show up in the RC, then you should probably take into account the scaling that was performed in 3E+ versions. If you have been using the aforementioned math for conversion, then you have really been making your players fight monsters that are harder to kill than normal. In the RC, a 20th level fighter has a THAC0 of 7. This doesn't match the Rules Cyclopedia at all. This means that he has a +20 at 20th level.which would give him a THAC0 of 0 using your mathematical formula. In 3.5, a Fighter gets a +1 to his attack bonus every level. Direct conversion does not take into account the scaling that WotC did in D&D 3+ This is, IMO, a much better alternative to direct conversion. Chances are there is something that has similar AC in d20 to a new monster in the adventure which is also very similar to a monster in the RC. In this case the large red dragon which has AC -3.
So pick an AC around a comparable RC creature. Say Paizo monster NN has AC 35 and it's about the same as a very old red dragon in that system (AC 36). I can’t thank you enough.Alex wrote:Instead of mathematical conversion, why don't you go by comparison to existing monsters.
